Benefits:

A Supplier of Choline

Lecithin is a natural source of choline (a B vitamin) in the form of phosphatidylcholine. Choline is an essential nutrient for proper brain and liver function. It is a component of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and is needed for cell membrane integrity and to facilitate the movement of fats in and out of cells. Research suggests that choline may improve performance in endurance activities.

The Heart Helpers

Studies have proven the ability of lecithin to reduce blood cholesterol levels, an action that promotes heart health. Lecithin acts as an emulsifier, breaking down cholesterol into smaller particles, allowing it to pass through the arteries. This prevents cholesterol and fatty deposits from sticking to blood platelets or arterial walls, which in turn, prevents atherosclerosis.

Lecithin and choline also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in other ways. Choline participates in the metabolism of homocysteine, a sulphur-containing amino acid that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. High therapeutic doses of choline were found to reduce homocysteine levels.

Healthy Liver Function

Lecithin is a key component of the various circulating lipoproteins that transport fat and cholesterol around the body. Without lecithin, the liver cannot properly manufacture these lipoproteins, possibly resulting in fat build-up in the liver.

Choline is so essential to normal liver function that its deficiency can lead to abnormal liver function in a matter of weeks. Research over an 8-year period showed that lecithin also helps to protect liver cells from alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis.

Brain Tonic

In the brain, choline is transformed into acetylcholine, a vital compound for the transmission of messages. This has a proven effect on our thinking ability and memory. Other studies have indicated that we can minimize age-related memory loss with long-term use of lecithin as a dietary supplement.

Reproduction and Development

Choline is important for foetal and infant brain and mental development. This is why lecithin and choline are highly recommended for pregnant and lactating women.

Lecithin also plays a role in male fertility. In vitro studies have demonstrated the ability of lecithin to restore normal structure and movement of abnormal sperm cells. Animal studies on female infertility found that choline plays a role in egg implantation.

Reasons for Lecithin Supplementation

Good food sources of lecithin such as egg yolk, red meat and animal organs are also high in cholesterol and fat. Unfortunately, in our efforts to cut back on
