Pharmacology
Zinc oxide is applied externally as a mild astringent for the skin and a soothing protective for slight excoriations. Benzyl benzoate is acomponent of cinnamon oil and balsam peru. Balsam peru is a resin that is extracted from a tropical tree called myroxilon, which when converted into oil, becomes a strong healing substance for any kinds of skin irritation. It has mild antiseptic action by virtue of its content of cinnamonic and benzoic acids. It is used for symptomatic relief of hemorrhoids, eg. ulcers and puritis.

Rarely absorbed as it is used externally. If topical benzyl benzoate is systemically absorbed, it is rapidly hydrolyzed to benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol which is further oxidized to benzoic acid. The benzoic acid is conjugated with glycine to form hippuric acid and which is primarily excreted in the urine.
